Lidge Out / Wheeler In

Saturday, March 31st, 2007
Intro Welcome to the experiment that is This Blog In Baseball. I am your typical baseball fan Stewart. Each morning, I hope to provide the story of the day in the world of MLB. I realize that I am not breaking any ground in the world of journalism or blogging, I thought it might be useful down the line to keep this information organized throughout the season. When I signed up for my openserving site, the admin made a suggestion to me that I thought was pretty interesting. At the bottom of each article, I am going to present you with the "Chump and the Champ". It will have two baseball players (that may or may not be relevant to the article) that you are encouraged to vote for in the main site's Hall of Fame. Lidge Out / Wheeler In In a move that could have realistically occured anytime last season, Houston Astros closer Brad Lidge was demoted in favor of Dan Wheeler. So is the life of a nasty closer. One season you are mowing down hitters on road to a sub-2.00 ERA with 40+ saves, the next you are getting yanked from the mound mid-save. Aside from the freak that is Mariano Rivera, closers never seem to put up more than 4 or 5 dominant seasons. Whether it be steroids (Gagne), overuse (Thigpen), plain idiocy (Rocker), or in Lidge's case - confidence issues, closers careers are always a fun rollercoaster. Found His Way, or the next “Mr. May”?

Saturday, March 31st, 2007
Alex Rodriguez is absolutely locked in. After homering in the 1st inning against Minnesota Twins starter Boof Bonser, Rodriguez has 6 home runs through the first 7 games of the season. He is the 9th major leaguer to accomplish this feat, and the first Yankee. In the dugout after his home run, he could barely contain smile after smile. Who can blame the guy? His teammates were high fiving him, and Yankee fans throughout the country were saying "Finally!". As A-Rod is possibly on the verge of making history, he still has a long way to go. Don't think for a second that A-Rod has won over the Yankee faithful for the rest of the season -- you can tell that they can't wait to start calling him "Mr. April" as the boos rain down after a late summer game in which he strikes out with the bases loaded to end the game. Who knows, maybe Alex will continue his amazing hitting (afterall, he DOES have almost 500 career home runs). It will fun to laugh at all the hypocrite Yankee fans who practically wanted to see him fall off a jetway last year. Enjoy it while it lasts Mr. Rodriguez!
